East Side Parks Area 3Bay City is divided by Sycamore into West Side and East Side.

Uptown East Side, a.k.a. Uptown, is anchored by Corona Tower and the Corona Mall. Farther north is the Bay City Waterfront with The Docks and Harbor Shipyards. Central East Side centers on The Parks area, consisting of Central Park and The Martial Arts Center, with Bay City Medical on the south, Bay City Police Department on the west, and Bay City High on the north.

Just east of The Parks area, the topography becomes increasingly forested and is sparsely populated. Logging companies maintain logging roads in the area which are rough, pocketed, and slippery in wet weather.

Bay City Old Town West Side

Old Town West Side is Garik Shayk's home at the beginning of the series.

The area is known in Bay City as West Side. Although part of Old Town, if you inquire if someone hails from Old Town, they will likely ask you to clarify West Side or East Side.

You can now virtually stroll each street the seventeen-year-old Garik roams on his skateboard or rides on his Street Strider.

This map covers one-fourth of Bay City, from Magnolia near the Argyle Station tracks to Sycamore that cuts north and south through the city.

Look for City View Apartments. Just east is The Flower Shop, the business run by Marisa Bruni's parents.

Fasst Market is located on First, and We Got Junk is a handful of blocks to the north on Ninth.

Just south of The Cliffs, the upscale residential enclave that has signified wealth and accomplishment for much of Bay City's history, is St. Anne's Church, where Garik attends. Occasionally his aunt Irina goes with him, but mostly the youth attends alone. It's worth it to him, however, as the interior of the church reminds him of his Russian homeland. It's a chance for him to reconnect with his past for a short time when he's there.

At First and Sycamore is the Old City Hall, now a park and community event center. It's a beautiful building and has survived two earthquakes, but it has outlived its time for modern city governance. Retrofitting the old stone building was more expensive than the all-new City Hall east of Sycamore on Ninth.

Garik is aware of two places on this map not mentioned in the books. The Old Railway Easement dates from the earliest days of Bay City. It forms a 40-foot alley-like no-man's strip of bare land between the rear-facing facades of the buildings along Avenue B and Avenue C. The easement is fenced with chain link and the gates are kept locked. Garik and his friends have climbed over to explore, but the area has long since lost its allure. The old tracks are buried, and at seventeen, he and his friends have found better things to do, like visit Chow Down at the Corona Mall or the Connel Street Skate Park east of Sycamore.

The Utility Access Corridor between Avenue C and Avenue D is even less interesting to Garik. It runs alongside City View Apartments, and crews going in and out of the corridor are one more reminder that he lives in a working-class neighborhood. The strip of concrete runs for nearly 15 blocks and is dotted with manhole covers, massive and unsightly electrical switch boxes, and signs warning of high voltage. Keep out!

Bay City Uptown East Side

Most often referenced simply as Uptown, Uptown East Side is the center of Bay City life.

Uptown runs from Sycamore on its western edge to Bay City High on the east. North is Harbor Shipyards, a miniature city in its own right.

Just to the south over Ninth, the new City Hall grounds the line that separates the trendy Uptown area from the less fashionable Old Town.

While in Uptown, have lunch at Chow Down on the Corona Mall, visit Masti's Deli for a carry-out treat, and don't forget Swizzel's Shoes for the best footwear in the business. They even have a cobbler on site for maintaining your Gucci loafers.

If Chow Down isn't your style, there's always The Luncheon Lady. The hours are more limited, but no one can criticize the food or the service. Both are top notch.

A drive through Pill Hill will harken back to Bay City's old days when the Medical Center was located where Corona Tower now stands. The sprawling mansions and brownstones of Pill Hill showcase the city's elite.

The less showy folk enjoy Overlook Estates. The homes are no cheaper, just less "in your face." Plus, many of the lots in Overlook have stunning views over The Marshes. Birding opportunities abound!

All-in-all, Uptown is the place to be in Bay City. You know you've made it when you can call Uptown home!

Bay City Old Town East Side

Old Town East Side is Garik Shayk's "homie" stomping ground.

However, if you asked Garik directions to a location in Old Town East Side, he would likely have a moment of confusion. To him, as to his fellow Bay City citizens, the area is simply East Side.

Visit the locations seventeen-year-old Garik enjoys with his friends, either on his skateboard or driving his Street Strider.

This map covers one-fourth of Bay City, from Sycamore on the west to the eastern borders of the city.

You can visit Kang's Garage where Garik found his abandoned Street Strider, and south of that, the warehouse Dieter's father rented to build his son an indoor skating park in Reflections of the Silverback.

Between Sycamore and Park Avenue is the outdoor skate park Garik and his friends visit on a regular basis, Connel Street Skate Park. East is the Powerline Right-of-Way and the Avenue C/Cowden Street overpass that takes you towards the East Side Parks Area and the medical district and Bay City Medical.

LUCKY! Station at Powerline Drive and Cowden is familiar to Garik. In Reflections of the Silverback, he visits LUCKY! with two fellow hybrids. When they suspect they are being followed, they escape across the Avenue C/Cowden Street overpass and make their way deeper into the city.

Farther north is the new City Hall, the Bay City Police Department, and the City Transportation Department where Garik holes up in Taking the Tower. It's also where he learns why Jantzen Hefferly hurts so much when he rematerializes from his gaseous state.

Other places to look for are Central Park, the most beautiful place in Bay City; The Martial Arts Center, where Garik first meets Kevin Lee; and Kerre's Dive, where Garik's aunt Irina worked as a waitress before going on assistance and meeting her boyfriend, Arik Oblonsky.

The Ransom Communications Building is located on Stanwick Hill in one of the oldest parts of Bay City. The streets just south of the Ransom are known as Far South Bay City (generally called the less cumbersome Far South) and still contain some of the most valuable real estate in the city. East across the Powerline Right-of-Way is more affordable, a struggling area that offers better prospects to businesses on a budget.

East Side is a step above the West Side where Garik lives, but neither side of Old Town compares to Bayside or Uptown. Except for Garik's time with his friends at Chow Down under Corona Tower, those are areas he can only dream of. One day he hopes they can be his.

Bay City Downtown Bayside

Downtown Bayside is the traditional heartbeat of Bay City.

Although Downtown Bayside is the name emblazoned on city maps, the area is better known as Bayside. Ask anyone who makes Bay City their home, and they will tell you they are heading to Bayside for the day, or out shopping in Bayside, or even write you directions saying, "Once you reach Bayside ..." They assume you will know exactly where they mean.

Shipping has been the lifeblood of Bay City since its inception in 1884, and while new industries have moved in, The Docks, Interstate Transport, and Argyle Station (trains) are as vital as ever. They are the lifeblood to much of the western United States.

To the east of The Docks, visit Harbor Shipyards. Protected by massive breakwater barriers, the Shipyards operates year-round, good weather and bad. No project is too large for the dry docks and gantry cranes at Harbor Shipyards.

Williams Street Apartments runs for nine blocks along Shorefront, although the buildings open to the Williams Street side. However, the views from the back!! Balconies along Shorefront open to Cassel Bay for the view of a lifetime.

Waldorf's Department Store, an upscale shopping destination, anchors Downtown Bayside, perfect for the upscale apartments along Williams Street and the more established residences in Shady Ridge Acres. Shady Ridge offers views of the Bay without the smells or the noise. It's the perfect combination for those with a refined sense of what they want out of life.

An interesting note about Circleview, the street that runs from Interstate Transport to Pueblo twelve blocks away. Originally, Pueblo ran all the way to Puritan, the way Pawnee still does. When Interstate Transport extended Pueblo and named it Circleview, the name change went all the way to Sycamore through a clerical error at City Hall. The name stuck, the signs were eventually changed, and no one thinks anything any longer of changing from Pueblo to Circleview when crossing Sycamore, all without doing anything other than crossing the street!
